Gaston County Skywarn is sponsored by Gaston County ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Services).  The purpose of Gaston County Skywarn is to provide two-way communications to the National Weather Service in times of severe weather emergencies.

The class is open to everyone and begins at 10:00 am.

National Weather Service - Severe Weather Reporting Criteria

Severe Thunderstorms:
Hail 3/4" or larger in diameter
Winds of 58 mph or greater
Any kind of significant damage:
 - Live trees or large limbs down
- Power lines down
- Damage to structures

Heavy Rain:
Rain amounts of 1" or more in less than an hour's time
Any amount in excess of 3"

Winter Weather:
The onset of any kind of wintry weather (snow, sleet, freezing rain)
Snow accumulations of 1" or more Sleet accumulations of .25"
Any glaze of freezing rain which begins to weigh down trees and power lines
